Well, it's the same as it has always been since I first laid eyes on it: the 1971 Topps #77 card of Mike Compton, who was an obscure catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Why do I like that particular card? Let me count the ways. First would be that the colors are great, with the green grass & the red of his Phillies uniform & the orange of the old catcher's mitt with the deep pocket from which it seemed no ball could ever escape. I also like the squinting, just-awakened eyes of the catcher, & how he looks like he should probably be out plowing the back forty instead of being backstop for a big-league club.

I just came across your comment on the Mike Compton's 71 Topps card. If it is your favorite you should send him one and he will sign it, he will sign anything you send him. I should know he is my dad. As far as plowing the back forty he has done that and everything else in the world he is an amazing guy. He has basically been in baseball since 65' and will be around for a few more anyway I expect. Once his playing days were over my brother and I spent our childhood with him all over the country while he was a Minor League Manager and Minor League Filed Coordinator. It was a great way to grow up. Too bad his Big League time got cut short, he was a hell of a backstop. He is regarded as the best of the best in pro ball when it comes to teaching catching. He was the Minor League Catching Coach for the Phillies for years and Carlos Ruiz is one of his disciples. FYI, he is the Field Coordinator for the Phillies now and just got his WS Ring. It is a thing of beauty. I have to admit of all the photos they took that day in 1970 at Shea the one they used for the card is my least favorite. If you want to see the others just let me know. Also if you want dad's address let me know.
